In apparatus for converting coded input data representing a line of text justified in columns, but which may be a line which is to be printed as a whole or split into two half-column sections, in a first font or system of width measurement, into coded output data in a different font, justified as a whole or in two halves separately justified as is requisite, there is provided means for detecting a signal (e.g. two thin space codes) indicating the centre of a line to be divided into two half-columns, and detecting if said signal is within a range of positions wherein it can have this meaning, and if so justifying the two halves separately, while justifying the line as a whole if no such signal is present in the range. The justification calculations are performed by a computer which calculates the line remainder, number of spaces, and hence required length for each space. Where a line is for two half columns, the first half is read and justified before the second half is read.</p> |
