Intricate passages are formed in stainless steel, by placing nickel between two parts of the stainless steel, diffusion bonding them together, diffusion bonding a support made of stainless steel to said two parts and removing the nickel by chemical means, e.g. leaching with boiling nitric acid. Alternatively, wires of stainless steel and nickel may be twisted and diffusion bonded together and the nickel thereafter chemically removed preferably by boiling nitric acid. In a preferred embodiment alternate plates (22), (24), Fig. 1 (not shown), of nickel and stainless steel are bonded together at 2050‹ F. to 2175‹ F., e.g. 2150‹ F., for ten to thirty minutes under 50 p.s.i. in a hydrogen atmosphere. The stack is machined, lapped and polished and side panels 26 of stainless steel bonded thereto at 2050‹ to 2175‹ F., e.g. 2150‹ F. for twenty minutes. The nickel layers are leached out with boiling nitric acid to produce a flow straightener 28 having passages 30. The steel and nickel plates may have copper flashings on both sides to facilitate bonding. It is possible to electroplate patterns of nickel on the stainless steel to produce intricate passages. |
