An upright cylinder half filled with water, with an overhead container delivering finely powdered carbide through a vertical tube, has a chamber midway between the water and the container, through which passes a pivot arm between a valve on the side of the cylinder and a cone shaped feed control member in the outlet of the container. Through the horizontal floor of the chamber, passes an upright spindle between a float which is acted upon the gas pressure inside the cylinder, and an upper member which presses upwards on the pivot arm, so that it controls the supply of carbide in dependence on the pressure.
