[Also in Division C3] Organic isocyanates are prepared by phosgenating N-silyl-substituted primary amines at a temperature of from - 80� to 250� C. The products have the general formula R(NCO)a, where R is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, aryl, alkaryl, or aralkyl group which may be unsubstituted or may contain elements of Groups IV to VII. Examples 1, 2 and 3 describe the preparation of methyl isocyanate from N- methylaminotrimethyl silane, bis-(trimethylsilyl) methylamine and a mixture of silazanes respectively. The preparations of isobutyl, allyl and phenyl isocyanates are also described. |
