In a two-part coupling suitable for use with circuit boards, the contacts 20 of the female part are contained in an insulating block 24 and comprise two opposed side plates 18, 181 and at least accesses into which a complementary male contact can enter from different directions through openings in the block. Each contact is of sheet metal folded into channel shape with a terminal portion 15 and an aperture 16 in the channel web, and is held in a respective opening 21 in the block by projections 25 on the plates engaging a shoulder 28 in the opening 21 and the terminal portion 15 being folded against an outer face of the block. A male contact pin (28) can mate with the contact 20 by insertion through either end of the opening 21 or through either of the two lateral apertures 23, 231 in the block (corresponding to the four directions of the broken arrows in Fig. 5a). Contact elements 19, 191 on the side plates engage projections (27) on the pins (28). The block 24 and a block (29) holding the male pins (28) are mounted on respective circuit boards and the blocks can thus be coupled with the boards in different relative positions. Other female contacts (Figs. 7a, 7b, not shown), are of rectangular tubular form with an opening each of two opposite walls, the other two walls either being bowed inwardly or having contact elements 19; the terminal portions are omitted. A prior art contact (Fig. 2a, not shown), is of rectangular tubular form with a terminal piece (10) and with tongues cut on two opposed sides and bent inwardly to form resilient contact elements. The blocks may be either a single piece or two pieces with a shoulder at each end of the opening (Fig. 8, not shown), to accommodate female contacts without terminal portions.
