The polymerization of olefins - especially ethylene or propylene - in fluidized bed gas phase reactors is an important commercial process. Such polymerization reactors are prone to fouling under adverse conditions. This fouling can be manifested in the form of large polyolefin "chunks" and/or polyolefin "skins" which adhere to the reactor internals. Under extreme conditions, the reactor must be shut down for cleaning. It is known to employ gamma ray sources/detector systems to monitor chink formation. This invention provides an improvement to such monitoring. In particular, this invention enables the use of an existing gamma ray source/detector system to measure and monitor the fluid bed density and the use of the measurements to control the fluid bed density.
