The invention relates to a method for a diaphragm pump to prevent diaphragm overstretching and can preferably be used in a hose-diaphragm pump, in which the primary working medium loads a tubular hose diaphragm on the inside. The method and the device for carrying out the method ensure that, when the conveyance of the secondary medium is interrupted on the suction side, primary working medium is not sucked up from the storage reservoir in each suction stroke via the top-up valve and conveyed into the pump chamber during the delivery stroke, with the result that an overstretching of the hose diaphragm and finally its destruction can be caused. This is achieved in that, when the conveyance of the secondary medium is interrupted on the suction side, an automatic ventilation or gassing of the secondary medium remaining in the diaphragm pump takes place, the system vacuum on the secondary side, which controls the ventilation or gassing in the suction phase, being lower than the system vacuum on the primary side which controls the balance of primary working medium during normal operation. In the device for carrying out the method, between a suction valve and a shut-off flap or interruption point a ventilation or gassing tube opens into a suction line and is equipped at its other end with a ventilation or gassing valve. <IMAGE>
