In a recording and replay system for colour images, the colour image quality for replay in cue review is improved by the video signal for each frame or field, scanned at a predetermined multiple of the colour subcarrier frequency, is recorded divided over a number of tracks, only some of the recorded information being selected for reconstruction of the image to be replayed in cue review mode. In detail, only pixel groups which in each case correspond to a whole colour subcarrier period (1-4, 5-8, 9-12 etc) are recorded on the tracks (1, 2 or 3) in such a manner that a video signal can be easily reconstructed from these with the correct colour information during the cue review mode. In a preferred embodiment, successive pixel groups are recorded on separate tracks, the pixel groups which are to be replayed during the cue review mode all being placed on a single track. Thus, these pixel groups on the single track can be in each case repeated several times in order to obtain instantaneous coherent information for reconstructing the cue review image. <IMAGE>
