PURPOSE:To attain picture coding with high efficiency by adding a number to a resolution component pattern appearing actually and changing the expression code length of the number to be added to the pattern depending on the frequency of appearance of the resolution component pattern. CONSTITUTION:The figure shows the resolution component produced in applying block coding with a block comprising a 4X4 picture element and phiij is the resolution component (1 bit per picture element) given to each picture element. The resolution component is binary pattern information having two-dimensional spread and a number is given to each component pattern. The maximum number of the numbers required for the 4X4 picture element block is 65,536, but since resolution components not appearing at all exist, the number is given only to the resolution component patterns appearing actually and no number is given to the resolution component patterns not appearing at all, thereby reducing the required coding string. For example, when the resolution component patterns appearing in this way are within 2,048 kinds, the code string required for the numbering is 11 bits per block and it is possible to reduce data in comparison with 16 bits of original information.
