A vehicle type discriminator for distinguishing vehicle type at the toll gate comprises first opto-electric sensors(50) detecting the existence of a passing vehicle, a pad switch(40) detecting the tire size with the resistance corresponding to the tire width, a second opto-electric sensor(10-30) placed at certain distance from the first sensor(50), and a discriminating circuit. The opto-electric sensors comprise a sensor(10) for detecting the porjected part of the vehicle, a sensor(20) for detecting the bottom configuration of the vehicle, a sensor(30) for detecting the cargo area of the vehicle.
