PURPOSE:To improve the workability for retrieval and reference by delivering successively the retrieved image data in the order of the later ones based on the input time information recorded into a part of the index data or the physical storing order of the index data against a memory medium. CONSTITUTION:When the retrieving conditions and a retrieving start command, etc., are indicated to a control part 1 from an input part 3, the plural index data stored in an index area of an external memory part 5 are read into a buffer memory of the part 1 by an amount equal to the prescribed number of bytes from the lowest level byte An positioned at the terminal side of the index area through the tip part of the index area. Then a key data area 7a, etc., are selected out of plural index data 7 stored in the buffer memory and at the same time these data are sorted in the order of the later ones to be stored in the buffer memory. Then an operator decides order of the input time points from the vertical array position of the data 7 and can be displayed and referred the desired image data in the order of pages on the screen of a display part 4.
