A transmission image of an object to be measured (8) is to be produced which contains different substances with different chemical ordinal number. The X radiation penetrating through the object to be measured (8) is absorbed by a storage plate (10), the photo-stimulated luminescence of which is triggered by at least one read-out beam (14, 15) and is detected by at least one detector (16, 17). According to the invention, the distribution of the mean chemical ordinal number Z is derived from the ratio of the photo-stimulated luminescence of at least two luminescent storage substances A and B having different characteristic absorption lines. The transmission image can be suitably displayed in colour on a screen (26).
