The end of a first metal pipe (12) is fixed coaxially in the end of a second metal pipe (14) by a fixing device (18) which is separate from the sealing device (20) which seals the ends of the pipes together. The fixing device can be a first ring groove (18) set in adjoining surfaces of the end parts of the pipe whilst the sealing device is a second differently shaped ring groove (20) set in adjoining surfaces of the end parts. The end part of the first metal pipe has a greater spring back return rate than the end part of the second metal pipe and fits inside this second pipe.
