The safety device is installed in a vehicle. It comprises an armrest inside the vehicle adjacent a side panel of safety glass. A movable handle (7) is fitted in a recess (6) in the arm rest (2) and connected to a hammer arrangement (14) such that on pulling the handle the hammer is released to strike the glass and cause it to shatter into small fragments. USE/ADVANTAGE - Simple method by which a vehicle occupant can break a toughened window in an emergency.
