Vehicle headlamp for gas discharge lamp - has two part elliptical reflector with offset to spread beam

The headlamp reflector is constructed from horizontal- and vertical ellipses with the second focus of the vertical ellipses near a shutter (20) which defines the beam cut-off position and with the horizontal second focus near the lens (22). The reflector is split into two vertical halves, with one half offset to spread the beam horizontally. The half to be offset depends on the requirement to spread the beam to either side i.e. for LH or RH application. The respective reflector half is offset towards the centre line. The system is particularly applicable to the higher intensity discharge lamps. ADVANTAGE - Improved lighting spread with discharge lamps.
