The description relates to a process for producing co-oligomers containing as inherently polymerised components: a) semi-esters of maleic acid with oleophilic alcohols and/or their low alkylene oxide addition compounds; b) acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid; and possibly also c) subsidiary products of other hydrophilic and/or oleophilic comonomers. According to the invention, these are produced by the mass polymerisation of components (a) and (b) and possibly (c) in the presence of an initiator.
