A device for opening a container (1) sealed by a lid (3) contains a heat source which heats the container in the region of the lid and removes the lid by the force of a spring (4). The heat source is an electrically operated heating coil (2). The container wall has a weakened region near the lid. ADVANTAGE - Lightweight device has no unreliable, costly mechanism.
