The present invention is a pool cover roller apparatus comprising a roller tube having first and second ends and including one or more tube sections, having sufficient length to fit across a pool and having a tube wall that, in cross-section, regularly alternates around the tube between first wall portions and second wall portions where the first wall portions protrude more radially outward than the second wall portions, two brackets, each sized to fit onto an opposite edge of a pool and having an upper plate, two sleeves, each mounted to rotate in an upper plate of a bracket and having first and second apertures, a first end connector having a crank handle to permit an operator to apply torque, having an axle shaft to fit into a first aperture to turn within a sleeve, having an axle stop between the crank handle and the axle shaft to abut against the first aperture to limit the longitudinal movement of the axle shaft relative to the sleeve, a tube insert sized to slide in close connection within the first end of the tube to establish a keyed relationship with at least some of the first and second tube wall portions to prevent rotation of the tube insert relative to the tube, and a tube stop located between the tube insert and the axle shaft to abut against the first tube end, a fastener to catch about a second aperture to secure the first end connector within the first sleeve, a second end connector having an axle shaft to fit into a first aperture to turn within a sleeve, an axle stop at one end of the axle shaft to abut against the first aperture to limit the longitudinal movement of the axle shaft relative to the sleeve, a tube insert sized to slide in close connection within the second end of the tube to establish a keyed relationship with at least some of the first and second tube wall portions to prevent rotation of the tube insert relative to the tube, and a tube stop located between the tube insert and the axle shaft to abut against the second tube end, a fastener to catch about a second aperture to secure the second end connector within the sleeve, and an appendage means to fasten the pool cover along the length of the tube.
