PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent dust from adhering to a slit glass and to prevent the slit glass from being soiled by providing a dust-proof cover with which the upper surface of the slit glass is covered. SOLUTION: The upper surface of the slit glass 5 is covered with an attachable/detachable type cover 30 when an image is not read from a carried original, that is, when the image is read from a still picture and when the image reader is not used, and the cover 30 is removed when the image is read from the carried original. The cover 30 has a cover part 31 having nearly the same size as the upper surface of the glass 5 and a handle part 32 attached to the upper surface of the cover part 31. In order to cover the upper surface of the glass 5 with the cover 30, an original carrying device 20 is opened and the cover part 31 is attached to cover over the glass 5 while holding the handle 32. It is conceivable to use a slide type dust-proof cover sliding along the upper surface of the glass 5 as the dust-proof cover.
