An apparatus for the emptying of a plate press during the manufacture of laminated plates, the plate press having a lower press plate and an upper press plate, includes an arrangement for the picking-up of fully pressed laminated sheets at the discharge side of the opened plate press to form an entry mouth between the lower press plate and the laminated sheet, and a conveyor tray which is insertable into the entry mouth to thereby pick-up the laminated sheet, which is removable from the opened plate press while supported on the conveyor tray. A suction lifter arrangement is provided at the discharge side of the plate press and includes suction lifters which are movable into the opened plate press and lowerable onto a fully pressed laminated sheet in the press. The laminated sheet is lifted by way of the suction lifters to form the entry mouth. A laminated sheet receiving table is positioned at the discharge side of the plate press and is hoistable or lowerable. The conveyor tray while supporting a picked-up laminated sheet is movable over the laminated sheet receiving table and the laminated sheet is positioned onto the laminated sheet receiving table or onto laminated sheets already supported thereon by a reverse movement of the conveyor tray. The suction lifters act on the surface of a fully pressed laminated sheet, but only in a peripheral region and only for a very short time so that disturbances of the surface structure of the sheet are substantially prevented.
