PURPOSE: To provide a nonlinear optical device with which a more perfect switching operation is possible and an optical switching operation of a low- operating power is possible with a small size by utilizing the second order nonlinear optical effect having the efficiency higher than the third order nonlinear optical effect. CONSTITUTION: An optical waveguide 5 approximately satisfies a phase matching or pseudo phase matching condition between a propagation constant of an angular frequencyω3 which is the sum frequency light of signal light and control light (angular frequencyω2 ), a propagation constant of the signal light and a propagation constant of the control light. The effective second order nonlinear optical constant relating to the sum frequency light generation in the optical waveguide 5 defined as deff , the refractive index of the control light as n2 , the light density of the control light as I2 , the frequency of the sum frequency light as n3 , the length of the optical waveguide 5 as L and the light velocity in vacuum and dielectric constant as (c) andε, respectively, are 0.5π<(deff / n2 )×(212ω2ω3 /-(n3εc<3> ))<0.5>×L<1.5π. |
