PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate a forged 500 won coin. SOLUTION: A couple of coils 14A and 14B are arranged on both side walls 3A and 3B of a coin passage 2 where a coin 1 to be sorted is rolled opposite each other across the coin passage 2 so that their centers meets the center of the coin 1, and the diameters of the coils are smaller than the diameter of the coin 1 and the coils are connected in series. Then this device is equipped with 1st sensors 14 which oscillates at a 1st frequency to produce mutually opposite-phase magnetic fields and previously stores a memory 60 with a permissible range based upon the minimum value of the detected voltage level of a 1st sensor when a 500 yen coin rolling in the coin passage passes by the 1st sensor, and a CPU 10 decides the coin as a genuine coin when the minimum value of the detected voltage level by the 1st sensor when the coin 1 to be sorted passes by the 1st sensor is within the permissible range in the memory.
