<p>This invention relates to a method of manufacturing 1-(2-deoxy-alpha-D-erythro-pentofuranosyl)-5-azacytosine by the treatment of protected alkyl or aralkyl 2-deoxy-D-erythro-pentofuranoside with silylated 5-azacytosine in the presence of Lewis acid and subsequent removal the protecting groups.</p>
