A method for controlling a speed change mode for an automatic transmission is provided to improve driving efficiency of a driver by improving a shift feeling in changing speed. A brake operation is carried out in driving at D state(S10), and it is confirmed whether a vehicle is completely stopped or not(S20). It is confirmed whether a break pedal is pushed or not for a certain time while a vehicle is stopped(S30). If the break is pushed for a certain time, a TCU maintain the vehicle stop even if a driver takes off the pedal after the certain time, and the vehicle begins moving by an accelerator(S50).
