Polymers of one or more ethylenically and/or diethylenically unsaturated monomers prepared in the presence of a Ziegler type catalyst are, upon completion of the polymerization and while still contaminated with some catalyst residue, treated with an excess of an alcohol or phenol over that required to react with such residue at above 90 DEG C. while excluding molecular oxygen prior to and during such treatment. Specified monomers are ethylene, ethylene-propylene and ethylene-butylene mixtures, butadiene, isoprene, their mixtures, styrene, vinyl toluene, vinylnaphthalene, vinylxylene, vinylmethylnaphthalene, vinyl isopropyl benzene, and vinylcyclohexene, alkyl vinyl ethers and copolymers of the ethers with olefins. Specified alcohols and phenols include methanol through to cetyl alcohol, "oxo" alcohols, cyclohexanol, ethylene glycol, glycerine, benzyl alcohol, cyclohexenol, allyl alcohol, the beta-alkoxyethanols, the monoalkyl ethers of diethylene glycol, phenol, cresol, beta-naphthol and resorcinol.
