<p>1,224,188. #-Caprolactone and #-formyloxycaproic acid. UGINE KUHLMANN. 29 May, 1968 [31 May, 1967], No. 25800/68. Heading C2C. #-caprolactone and #-formyloxycaproic acid are obtained by re-arranging peroxides of cyclohexanone, particularly those having the Formula (I) and (II) which comprises bringing into close contact, at 0‹ to 40‹ C., the peroxides previously disolved in an inert non-polar solvent, which may be a linear or branched saturated hydrocarbon having 5 to 12 carbon atoms or a cycloalkane, and solutions of formic acid having a water content below 25%, containing a catalytic amount of a mineral or strong organic acid, decanting the non-miscible phases and extracting from the formic acid solution the resultant #-caprolactone and #-formyloxycaproic acid. Aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene and xylenes, or halogenated solvents such as carbon tetrachloride may also be used. The mineral or strong organic acid may be sulphuric, phosphoric, hydrochloric, methane sulphonic, ethane sulphonic or p-toluene sulphonic acid.
