In a split-ring type synchronized clutch the free ends 19, 20 of the ring are bent inwardly so that when it is bent from its preformed elliptical into circular form by engagement with the conical friction surface 24 of shift sleeve 5, the ends of the ring remain clear of the surface 24. The axial shift force may be reduced by providing interengaging conical end surfaces 25, 26 on the ring 13 and engaged clutch member 6 respectively, or by providing balls 28 which engage the end face of the ring 13<SP>1</SP> and are carried in lost-motion recesses (29), Fig. 4 (not shown), in the clutch member 7.</p> |
