[Also in Division C3] Esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid polymers and copolymers esterified with long-chain alcohols of formula RCR 1 HOR, where R is a polymer group of a polymer of a C 2-4 olefin of molecular weight 300 to 3000, and R 1 is hydrogen or alkyl, are useful as viscosity index improvers in lubricating oil compositions. Preferred polymer groups are derived from polybutenes and polypropylene, and the acrylic polymer may also be esterified in part with short chain alcohols. |
