An apparatus for bending and toughening glass sheets comprises, in combination, complementary bending dies 1, 2 mounted to be advanced to a heated sheet 10 vertically suported therebetween to bend the sheet, both dies 1, 2 comprising a framework 5a, 5c and at least one of the dies carrying a continuous thin metal sheet 5b bent to the required curvature, <PICT:1099822/C1/1> and quenching means 6, 7 with air jets 8, located in position close behind the respective dies 1, 2 for operation immediately the dies are moved out of their path, thus permitting the successive bending and tempering without moving the glass. Each frame 5c is mounted on bars 5a mounted to slide on posts 3, 4 by suitable means 5, both dies having recesses 13 to accomodate the suspending tongs 11. Both dies ae covered with glass silk. The dies are moved into contact with a sheet 10 by means 12 after which they are retraced and quickly moved downwardly to allow the quenching streams from jets 8 to act upon the sheet. The quenching means 6, 7 may perform a slight oscillatory movement and may also be moved slightly nearer (say 2 inches) to the glass sheet during quenching. For glass sheets of thickness less than 5/32 inch it is possible to commence quenching within six seconds of the glass emerging from the furnace. |
