A linear unsaturated copolymer comprises monomeric units of the general formulae (A) -CH=CH-(CH2)z-and (B) <FORM:1098340/C3/1> where z is 2 or 3 or from 5 to 10, and R, RI, RII, RIII and RIV, are the same or different and represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and the molar ratios of A:B are between 10:1 and 10,000:1. The copolymer is made by copolymerizing a 4-, 5-, 7- or 12-membered cyclomonoolefin with a conjugated diolefin of the formula <FORM:1098340/C3/2> where R etc. is as above, or with a 5- or 6-membered isocyclic conjugated diene in the presence of a catalytic system consisting of a tungsten halide and an organometallic or metal hydride compound of a metal of Group I, II or III of the Mendeleef Periodic Table. The relative amounts of cycloolefin and conjugated diolefin in the copolymerization mix are kept between the molar ratio 10 and 10,000:1. A Friedel-Crafts halide and/or peroxy compound may be included in the catalyst. The polymerization is generally effected below 0 DEG C., and preferably in bulk. Suitable tungsten salts are WCl6, WOCl4, WBr5, WCl4, WCl2 an WCl2. 4/3AlCl3 obtained by reduction of WCl6 with a stoichiometric amount of Al metal. The cyclomonoolefins may be cyclo-butene, -pentene, -heptene, -octene, -decene or -dodecene. Specified conjugated dienes are butadiene, isoprene, 1,3-pentadiene, 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene, 4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene, 2,4-hexadiene, cyclopentadiene, and cyclo-1,3-hexadiene. The copolymers may be sulphur vulcanized. |
