Vinyl chloride polymer is produced by (1) forming a polymerisation medium by mixing water, an emulsifier and a redox catalyst comprising sulphate and sulphite radicals and an activating metal ion; (2) allowing the materials in the polymerisation medium to interact for 10-180 mins; (3) dispersing the monomer in the medium; and (4) subjecting the dispersion to polymerisation conditions for a time sufficient to convert a major portion of the monomer. Polymer of relatively narrow particle size distribution can be reproducibly produced, the standard deviation obtainable from run to run being about 0.01 mu.
