Production of modified silicon filler for vulcanisable

Modified silica with a surface of 100-300 m2/g and an oil absorption >2 cm3/g is produced from silica obtained by precipitation from an aqs. silicate soln. by use of acid by (a) suspending the silica in water, (b) adding a soln. of silicic acid to the suspension (c) thoroughly mixing the mixt., and (d) removing the water from the mixt. The modified silica has a greater apparent density than the untreated pdt. thus facilitating transportation. In rubber mixes, the modified silica gives longer vulcanisation times, and has a reduced tendency to adhere to rollers.
