A method of facilitating later stacking of articles, e.g. tiles, comprises a continuous conveyer carrying the articles, spaced at a set distance, alternate articles being gripped from the sides, lifted and allowed to fall on to the following article to produce stacked pairs along the conveyer. Tiles 1 on a conveyer 3 break a light beam 29 which, via electrical and pneumatic systems (Fig. 3, not shown) actuates, through a pneumatic delay device, gripping cylinders 16, (17) interconnected by a bar 6 and arms 14, 15 and carrying clamping rails 20, 21 attached to pistonrods 18, (19). These rails grip the tile and then a cylinder 8 raises tile 1a until tile 1b is below it. The rails then separate and tile 1a falls to cover tile 1b whereupon the gripping and lifting means descends to collect a following tile. |
