In apparatus for the compression moulding of fibrous or chip material e.g. glue coated chip material or a mixture of wood chips and powdered urea resin binder, wherein the material is fed into a chamber 2 e.g. by a screw feed, wherefrom it is displaced into a mould and is compression moulded therein by the upward displacement of a piston 4, which is heated by electrical coils 6, premature curing of the binder and adherence of the particles to the upper side of the piston is avoided by the cooling effect of compressed air introduced into the chamber 2 immediately above the upper surface of the piston 4, via a manifold and horizontal orifices 7 through the chamber wall 3. In the embodiment shown the chamber 2 is cylindrical and provided with a mandrel 1 for the production of a tube, and the orifices are inclined to an intersecting chamber radius whereby a cyclonic effect is produced which rotates the particles immediately above the piston 4 throughout the chamber feeding operation. The orifices 7 may also be radially directed, and may be arranged in more than one horizontal plane. The mandrel 1 may be omitted in the production of a plug. |
