Cartridge-type filter (Fig. 1), comprising filter cartridges 30 is converted to bed-type filter (Fig. 2) by removing cartridges 30, screwing strainers 70 or caps 90 on to seatings 40 and extending inlet pipe 14 by means of extension 56 to a point above the top of the filter bed 68. As a result, instead of influent material entering by pipe 14, being deflected by plate 52 (Fig. 1), and passing out and through filter cartridges 30 to effluent zone 24 before leaving by pipe 16, the influent material passes by pipe 56 (Fig. 2), to a point above bed 68 before being deflected by plate 64 downwards through the bed, e.g. of ion exchange resin or crushed anthracite, and thence through strainers 10 to effluent zone 24 before leaving by pipe 16.
