A memory plane comprises two word plates 14, Figs. 19 and 20 each formed of a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin and having parallel word lines 13 arranged on one surface, and a parallel arrangement of magnetic-coated digit wires 12 positioned between the word plates with the wires extending at right angles to the word lines, the word plates being arranged with the respective surfaces carrying word lines facing inwards and the digit wires being embedded in a thermosetting or thermoplastic resin 15. The plane is constructed by locating parallel digit wires or word conductors between two tapes, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), one tape being a thermoplastic resin layer 9, e.g. polyester film, with an adhesive coating 10 of a thermoplastic resin such as polyethylene, and the other tape 11 being similar to layer 9 but without an adhesive layer. The conductors are located in parallel relationship between the layers by passing the assembly between heated rollers, Fig. 5 (not shown). The non-adhesive tape 11 is then removed, Fig. 8, and replaced in the case of the word lines by a layer 14 of a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin, e.g. epoxy resin, Fig. 10 (not shown). A word plate is then formed by detaching the layer 14 from the tape 10, Fig. 11, the word lines 13 adhering to the layer. A single word plate is then positioned over a digit wire tape as shown in Fig. 12, insulation between the orthogonal word lines and digit wires being provided by a polyurethane insulating coating. The assembly is next bonded together by a thermosetting filling, e.g. epoxy resin, Fig. 15 (not shown) and the tape 9 of the digit wires then removed as shown in Fig. 17. The second word plate is then bonded to the assembly in like manner. In a modification, Fig. 21, (not shown), dummy uncoated digit wires are used, the dummy wires being withdrawn from the completed assembly and replaced by magnetic coated wires. An alternative arrangement, Fig. 23 (not shown) the magnetic coated wires have an outer coating of a resilient material such as latex rubber or a urethane resin. A further embodiment uses dummy spacing wires formed of glass, for example, between the digit wires. The surface of each word plate carrying the word lines may be impregnated with a powdered magnetic material which is applied to the surface of the tape 9 at the manufacturing stage shown in Fig. 8. |
