A novel process for preparing bromonitro alcohols of the formula WHEREIN R1 is selected from the group consisting hydrogen, methyl and halogenated methyl and R2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl and ethyl which may be substituted with at least one hydroxy group comprising reacting an aldehyde with a nitroalkane in the presence of an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide and reacting the reaction product with bromine at temperatures below 25 DEG C.
