Electronic display esp. for time, data etc. combines a liq. crystal unit with a fluorescent clear or diffuse element whose surface fluoresces under incident light and is controlled by the liq. crystal control devices. Each display character (11a-g, 12a-c, 13a, k, 14a-m) is controlled by a separate surface element of the liq. crystal unit (1'). The fluorescent element has formed portions corresponding to the characters, and the characters are produced by the optical inhomogeneity within the surface elements of the liq. crystal combined with the formed portions.
