A position indicator for linearly moving objects comprises inductance coils arranged coaxially along the path of a moving bridging element of magnetic material and generally tubular or annular shape sliding outside these elements. Thus, as the magnetic bridging element moves along, it bridges coils and causes signals to be produced indicating the position of the moving element. The bridging element comprises groups of holes along its axis, each group being arranged in a ring; one of the inductance coils has >=2 pole pairs spaced axially apart, such that the distance (L) between the outermost pairs of poles is defined by L=n(a+b)-1/2(a+3b), (where a is width of hole of bridging element along its axis of movement; b is distance between successive gps. of holes; n is a whole number >2). Used for determining the position of linearly movable components in inaccessible, typically gastight vessels; more specifically for monitoring the position and movements of control rods. The new arrangement enables the position of the rod at any location along its path to be determined very accurately with relatively simple equipment.
|
