<p>A process for the manufacture of O-cyano(substituted)alkyloximinoaryl nitriles of the formula: <IMAGE> wherein Ar is substituted or unsubstituted aryl or heterocyclic moiety and Q is a lower alkyl or phenalkyl moiety, is described. The process comprises the condensation of a cyanosulfonate of the formula: Ph-SO3-Q-CN wherein Ph-SO3- is an aromatic protecting group with Ph being unsubstituted or p-methyl-substituted phenyl, with an oximinoaryl nitrile of the formula: <IMAGE> The condensation reaction is preferably initiated in immiscible solvents for each reactant and in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst. Also included are the steps of preparing the oximinoaryl nitrile and an isomerization step whereby any trans-isomer that is found is converted to the desirable cis-isomer.</p> |
