A rotatable shaft(40) with a tapered portion(46) or tapered ring thereon is sealed within a housing(42) by a ring(44) sealingly held in the housing and having a like internal taper, straight or curved. Sealing between the tapers is by fluid at higher pressure than either side of the ring. The ring may be axially spring biassed(50) to seat on the shaft when no fluid is applied. The ring is resilient or rigid and comprises two rigid rings radially separated by resilient rings. The ring may extend over two opposite tapers.
