The inertia type starter for internal combustion engines uses an auxiliary air, hydraulic, or electric motor to impart kinetic energy to the gearbox mainshaft with the clutch decoupled. The clutch then engages to transfer the kinetic energy to the crankshaft. This method of starting reduces the energy required to start the engine. The gearbox is in neutral during starting. The starting sequence may be manually or automatically controlled. The angular velocity of the mainshaft is measured and displayed and/or coupled to a logic circuit. Under manual operation the driver engages the clutch when the mainshaft speed is sufficient, and under automatic control the logic circuit initiates engagement of the clutch when speed is sufficient. Compressed air or pressurised oil is used for automatic actuation.
