COMPOSITE METALLIC MEMBER

PURPOSE:To obtain a composite metallic member having superior fatigue resistance and wear resistance in simple stages by combining a metallic base material having a low C content with a metallic material for a surface layer having a higher C content than the base material and by carrying out quenching. CONSTITUTION:When a rodlike composite metallic member is manufactured, a round rodlike metallic base material 1 having a low C content is set in a tubular metallic material 2 for a surface layer having a higher C content than the base material 1. They are plastically worked with an extruder 3 to form a rodlike composite blank 4. The blank 4 is quenched to produce residual compressive stress in the surface part and to harden the surface part. Fatigue strength and wear resistance comparable to those of a conventional quenched carburized member can be provided.
