PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst carrier (especially having a honeycomb shape) excellent in collapsing resistance and heat resistance, by forming a beta-Al2O3 layer having heat resistance to the surface of a sintered carrier comprising mullite having heat resistance. CONSTITUTION:An aluminum compound and a barium compound are infiltrated in the surface of a sintered mullite or alumina carrier hardly reacted with a Ba-Al2O3 system obtained by sintereing at 1,400 deg.C or more and the impregnated one is baked at 1,300 deg.C or less to form a beta-Al2O3 layer 1. As one example of thus obtained honeycomb shaped carrier, one with compression strength of 120kg/cm<2> is cited.
