PURPOSE:To lengthen the life of a battery, by providing a space under a positive and a negative electrode plates to allow the positive electrode plate to elongate downward to prevent the projections of the positive and the negative electrode plates from short-circuiting to a strap. CONSTITUTION:A nonwoven or woven fabric of fiberglass or the like is used as a separator 1 and interposed between a positive electrode plate 2 and a negative electrode plate to prevent these plates from short-circuiting to each other due to contact. When the electrode plates are housed in a battery jar 3, a space 6 is provided between the inside bottom of the battery jar and the lower ends of the electrode plates. Even if the positive electrode plate 2 elongates due to intergranular corrosion, the plate 2 and the projection 5 of the negative electrode plate do not come into contact with each other, because the positive electrode plate elongates downward into the space 6.
