Compounds are described of formula wherein n is 1 or 2; m is 2-5 and X is -CH=CH- or -CH2-CH2-; or m is 1-4 and X is -CH=C=CH-; Z is -CH2OH, -CHO or -CONHR<1> [where R<1> is a hydrogen atom or C1-4 alkyl, aryl, -COR<2> (where R<2> is a hydrogen atom or a C1-4 alkyl or aryl group) or -SO2R<3> (where R<3> is a C1-4 alkyl or aryl group)]; Y is substituted or unsubstituted 3-phenoxy-2-hydroxypropyl. These compounds inhibit gastric acid secretion and provide gastrointestinal cytoprotection, and may be formulated for use in the treatment of ulcers.
