A wheel head comprises a wheel hub housing (1) provided with radial front flanges (12, 13) which axially cover the wheel bearing (35) or the interlocking connection (6) of the end of an axle shaft (8) nearer the wheel drive or the sun gear of a planetary gear train (4, 5, 6). A brake consisting of two identical half-brakes (14, 15) and a pair of brake pistons (16, 17) arranged between the latter is provided between said radial front flanges on a radial cross-piece (101) of the axle housing (11). A hollow wheel (9) for a wheel drive (5, 6, 8, 9, 10) can be mounted on the radial cross-piece (101). The braking heat is transferred directly from the wheel gear elements (5, 6, 8, 9, 10) to an air-cooled front flange (12, 13) of the wheel drive housing (1). As a result, the brake, whose diameter is limited only by the rim (2), experiences low stresses at low relative rotational speeds and smaller drag losses and generates no reaction forces which could distort the wheel drive during braking. This constructional principle can be applied to both non-driven and driven axles, with or without wheel drives, so that impaired brake performance due to rapid wear or accumulation of dirt or to moisture is substantially curtailed without the need to increase the overall length or steering radius or to provide forced circulation cooling when the brake is installed. |
