PURPOSE:To easily make a probe approach a recording layer without destructing the recording layer by providing a recording medium having a monomolecular film or a monomolecular built-up film of a specified amphipathic compound and a conductive probe electrode for detecting a tunnel current. CONSTITUTION:The device is provided with the recording medium 1 having the monomolecular film or monomolecular built-up film of the amphipathic compound comprising a salt consisting of an electron receptive compound and a heterocyclic compound in a hydrophilic part and a condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon having conjugated double bonds to the number of at least >=4 or preferably >=6 in a hydrophobic part and the conductive probe electrode 2 for detecting the tunnel current. As a result, a smooth film having conductivity can be obtained, and a position of the probe 2 from the recording layer 1' is directly known by the tunnel current from the film itself, so that danger of contact is almost nil. By this method, when the tunnel current is detected by the probe 2, the probe 2 can easily approach the recording layer 1' without destructing the recording layer 1'.
