Waste water contg. lipophilic substances, esp. from the cosmetic industry, is treated with oxidising agents and/or catalysts, and exposed to artifical UV radiation. Before, during and/or after this treatment, hydroxide-forming flocculants are added to the water, and water is finally pressed out of the slurry, stable to pressing, forming in the flocculation. Ions of transition metal(s) are used as catalyst, and the oxidising agent is H2O2 or O3, used in amt. of less than 50% (less than 10%) of the chemical O2 requirement. The amt. of catalyst is less than 0.05 (less than 0.01) mols. w.r.t. 1 mol. of oxidising agent. The electrical energy of the source of UV radiation is 50-1000 (100-400) Wh, w.r.t. 1 kg of O2 needed for total oxidn. and the intensity max. is at 250 nm. The process esp. involves; (a) addn. of catalysts comprising transition metal ions; (b) addn. of oxidising agent; (c) exposure to artifical UV radiation; (d) adsorption of the original lipophilic substance on hydroxide-forming flocculant; and (e) pressing the pressure-stable slurry formed by the flocculation. ADVANTAGE - Only a small amt. of material for disposal results from the treatment.
