Air conditioning system for motor vehicle avoiding need for compressor - uses heat from engine exhaust to compress refrigerant gas and electrically driven pump to circulate refrigerant

The air conditioning system cools air and directs it into the cabin of a motor vehicle. The air is cooled by refrigeration using heat from the vehicle exhaust to compress the refrigerant gas. The refrigerant passes through an external radiator (7), through a heat exchanger (9) in the cabin of the vehicle and then through a tube (6) wound round the exhaust pipe (5) from the vehicle engine (1). A pump (15) aids refrigerant circulation. The pump is driven from the electrical system of the vehicle. A circulation fan (11) moves air into the vehicle. ADVANTAGE - Avoids need for compressor, simplifying retro-fitting of air conditioning to motor vehicle.
